On 14/07/1773, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, aged 17, arrived in Vienna with his father, Leopold Mozart, during a journey intended to secure a court appointment. The visit formed part of continued efforts to obtain employment beyond Salzburg, where Mozart served under Archbishop Hieronymus Colloredo. Vienna, as the imperial capital, offered opportunities for patronage and positions within the court musical establishment. Leopold Mozart sought to present his son before influential figures connected to Empress Maria Theresa.
During the stay, Mozart performed and attempted to gain attention from court officials and potential patrons. Despite these efforts, no permanent appointment resulted from the visit. The Mozarts remained in Vienna through the summer, observing musical life in the city and exploring contacts. The trip concluded in late September 1773, when they departed without securing employment and returned toward Salzburg.
Although the immediate objective was not achieved, the Vienna visit exposed Mozart to orchestral and operatic styles circulating in the imperial capital. Shortly after returning, he composed a group of symphonies reflecting expanded orchestration and structural development. The arrival on 14 July 1773 therefore marked the beginning of an unsuccessful but formative attempt to obtain a court position in Vienna.
