On 23/09/1777, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart left Salzburg accompanied by his mother, Anna Maria Mozart, beginning a journey intended to secure a permanent position at a major European court. Mozart’s father, Leopold Mozart, remained in Salzburg after being denied leave by Archbishop Hieronymus Colloredo. At 21 years old, Mozart sought improved professional opportunities beyond Salzburg, where advancement and income were limited. The departure marked the start of an extended tour across German speaking regions and France. The first stages of the journey took Mozart and his mother to Munich, where he attempted to obtain employment with the Bavarian court. After a short stay, they continued to Augsburg, arriving in October 1777. In Augsburg, Mozart visited relatives, performed, and pursued contacts that might lead to commissions or a court appointment. These early stops formed part of a broader effort to establish himself independently from Salzburg’s court structure. Following Augsburg, Mozart and his mother traveled to Mannheim, arriving on 30/10/1777, where he remained for several months seeking a position with Elector Karl Theodor’s orchestra. When no appointment materialized, they departed for Paris on 14/03/1778. The journey that began on 23 September 1777 therefore initiated Mozart’s extended search for employment across major European musical centers.
