On 06/12/1774, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and his father, Leopold Mozart, arrived in Munich for an extended stay connected to a new operatic commission from the Bavarian court. Mozart, aged 18, had been invited to compose an opera for the Munich carnival season. The journey from Salzburg placed him in one of the leading musical centers of southern Germany, where he began preparing La finta giardiniera. During December, Mozart worked on the score, met singers, and participated in rehearsals organized for the court theater.
The stay in Munich extended through the winter months into early 1775. Mozart collaborated closely with performers and adjusted the music during rehearsals. The opera premiered on 13/01/1775 at the Salvatortheater and received repeated performances during the carnival season. While in Munich, Mozart and his father also explored the possibility of securing a permanent appointment at the Bavarian court. Despite favorable reception of the opera, no long term position was offered.
Mozart and Leopold remained in Munich until March 1775, after which they returned to Salzburg. Mozart resumed his duties as Konzertmeister under Archbishop Hieronymus Colloredo. The arrival on 6 December 1774 therefore marked the beginning of a winter residency centered on opera composition and professional negotiations.
