On 18/11/1763, seven year old Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart arrived in Paris with his father, Leopold Mozart, and his sister Maria Anna “Nannerl” Mozart as part of the family’s extended Grand Tour of Europe. The journey, which had begun earlier that year in Salzburg, was organized to present the children’s musical abilities to aristocratic audiences and courts across the continent. Paris, one of Europe’s major cultural centers, became a key stop where the Mozarts performed for members of the French nobility and musical public. During their stay in Paris, Wolfgang and Nannerl gave private performances and public concerts arranged through aristocratic patrons. The children demonstrated keyboard playing, improvisation, and ensemble performance, which attracted attention among Parisian audiences. While in the city, Mozart also composed early works, including keyboard pieces and sonatas intended for performance during the tour. The family remained in Paris for several months, using the city as a base before continuing their travels. The Paris visit in late 1763 preceded the Mozarts’ journey to London in April 1764, where Wolfgang would meet Johann Christian Bach. The arrival on 18 November 1763 therefore formed part of the early stages of the Grand Tour, which introduced the young Mozart to major European musical centers.
