In 12/1767, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, aged 11, was in Vienna with his father, Leopold Mozart, during a stay that marked one of his earliest encounters with professional opera production. The visit had begun earlier in 1767, and while in Vienna Mozart received a commission to compose an opera buffa titled La finta semplice. The libretto by Marco Coltellini was prepared for performance at the imperial court theater, and Mozart began composing the work while still in the city. The project faced complications during the Vienna stay. Opposition from some court musicians and logistical difficulties delayed the planned performance. Although Mozart completed the score in 1768, the opera was not staged in Vienna at that time. Despite these challenges, the experience introduced Mozart to the practical demands of composing for singers, adapting arias, and preparing a full length stage work. The Vienna period also included other compositions, including sacred music and instrumental works written for local patrons. The events of late 1767 therefore represent an early stage in Mozart’s development as an opera composer. After leaving Vienna, La finta semplice was eventually premiered in Salzburg on 01/05/1769. Mozart’s stay in Vienna during December 1767 thus placed him in a professional theatrical environment before his later operatic successes in Italy.
