The publication of the First Folio marked a pivotal point in literary history, significantly impacting both the English language and the theater. This collection contained 36 of William Shakespeare’s plays, many of which had not been previously printed or widely distributed. The First Folio was compiled by John Heminges and Henry Condell, fellow actors and colleagues of Shakespeare, who sought to preserve his work after his death.
Before this publication, many of Shakespeare’s plays existed solely in the form of individual quartos, which were often unauthorized and plagued with textual inaccuracies. The meticulous compilation of the First Folio ensured a more reliable and complete preservation of Shakespeare's oeuvre. Noteworthy plays in this collection include "Macbeth," "Julius Caesar," "The Tempest," and "As You Like It," among others.
The significance of this publication extended beyond the preservation of the texts. It also solidified Shakespeare’s role in shaping the English language and the realm of Western literature. Shakespeare introduced an extensive vocabulary and a variety of linguistic techniques that enriched the English language. Phrases like “break the ice” and “wild-goose chase,” originating from his plays, are still in common use today.
The First Folio also had a substantial impact on theater. By providing a more definitive text, it allowed for more consistent and faithful performances of the plays. This consistency helped to establish Shakespeare's works as central to the canon of English literature and drama, influencing generations of playwrights, actors, and directors.
Only around 750 copies of the First Folio were originally printed, and it is estimated that about 235 copies are still in existence today. These remaining copies are highly valued, with some auction sales reaching several million dollars. Institutions like the Folger Shakespeare Library and the British Library maintain significant collections of these folios, which are utilized for continual study and analysis.
