Burley House, located at 15 Cambridge Park in Twickenham, served as a private nursing home specifically for women experiencing nervous disorders. The facility was managed by Miss Jean Thomas, who provided care and support to those in need of a therapeutic environment. Virginia Woolf, under the guidance of her physician, Dr. Savage, was recommended to stay at Burley House as part of her treatment for mental health issues. This recommendation came after Woolf exhibited signs of restlessness and distress while living in London. In an effort to alleviate her condition, she was sent to Burley House for a "rest cure," which was a common practice at the time for individuals suffering from similar ailments. Woolf's stays at Burley House occurred over several years, with her first visit taking place in 1910, followed by additional stays in subsequent years. These periods at the nursing home were intended to provide her with a peaceful environment conducive to recovery and reflection.
