The Republic F-84 Thunderjet was an early jet-powered fighter developed for the United States Army Air Forces, later the United States Air Force, during the transition from piston-powered aircraft to jet propulsion after World War II. The prototype XP-84 Thunderjet completed its first flight on 28/02/1946 at Muroc Army Air Field, California, United States. The aircraft was developed by Republic Aviation, the same company that had produced the P-47 Thunderbolt fighter during World War II.
The XP-84 prototype was flown by Republic test pilot Wallace A. “Wally” Lien on its maiden flight. The aircraft featured a straight-wing design typical of early jet fighters and was powered by a General Electric J35 turbojet engine. Early test flights revealed several technical challenges, including structural issues with the wings and performance limitations at higher speeds. Engineers worked to address these problems through design modifications during the testing phase.
Following development and improvements, the aircraft entered production as the F-84B Thunderjet in 1947. The fighter had a maximum speed of approximately 622 mph (about 1,001 km/h) and was armed with six .50-caliber machine guns mounted in the wings. The Thunderjet was also capable of carrying bombs and rockets, allowing it to perform both fighter and ground-attack roles. Its ability to carry a significant external load made it useful as a fighter-bomber.
The F-84 Thunderjet later saw operational service during the Korean War beginning in 1950, where it was primarily used in ground-attack and fighter-bomber missions rather than air-to-air combat. Over 7,500 aircraft of the Thunderjet series were produced. The aircraft served with several allied air forces and contributed to the early jet fighter capabilities of the United States and its allies during the early Cold War period.
