The Northrop YF-23 was a prototype stealth fighter developed for the United States Air Force as part of the Advanced Tactical Fighter (ATF) program, which sought to produce a next-generation air superiority aircraft to replace older fighters such as the F-15 Eagle. The aircraft was designed by Northrop Corporation in partnership with McDonnell Douglas. The first prototype, YF-23A, completed its maiden flight on 27/08/1990 at Edwards Air Force Base, California, United States. The initial flight was conducted by Northrop test pilot Paul Metz. The aircraft featured a distinctive design with diamond-shaped wings, canted tail surfaces, and a smooth fuselage intended to reduce radar visibility. The YF-23 was built with stealth characteristics similar to other late Cold War experimental aircraft and incorporated internal weapons bays to maintain a low radar signature. Two prototypes were produced, each powered by different engines for evaluation: one equipped with the Pratt & Whitney YF119 turbofan and the other with the General Electric YF120 turbofan. During the ATF competition, the YF-23 demonstrated high-speed performance and long-range capability, with the ability to achieve supersonic speeds without using afterburners, a feature known as supercruise. The aircraft also incorporated advanced avionics and sensor systems designed for modern air combat. Its stealth-oriented design and aerodynamic configuration contributed to reduced radar detectability and efficient high-speed flight. The YF-23 competed directly with the Lockheed YF-22 prototype. After a series of flight tests and evaluations conducted between 1990 and 1991, the U.S. Air Force selected the YF-22 design in April 1991 for further development, which later became the F-22 Raptor. Although the YF-23 did not enter production, the aircraft remains an example of advanced stealth fighter design developed during the final years of the Cold War. #YF23 #Northrop #StealthFighter #AdvancedTacticalFighter #AviationHistory
