The Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II is a fifth-generation multirole stealth fighter developed as part of the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) program, an international project led by the United States Department of Defense. The aircraft was designed to replace several older combat aircraft used by the United States Air Force, United States Navy, United States Marine Corps, and allied air forces. The prototype X-35A, which led to the F-35 design, completed its first flight on 24/10/2000 at Palmdale, California, United States.
The X-35 prototype was developed by Lockheed Martin in collaboration with Northrop Grumman and BAE Systems. The first flight was conducted by test pilot Jon Beesley. The aircraft featured stealth shaping, internal weapons bays, and advanced sensor systems designed to reduce radar detection and improve situational awareness. During the JSF competition, the X-35 competed against the Boeing X-32 prototype. After a series of flight tests and demonstrations conducted between 2000 and 2001, the U.S. Department of Defense selected the X-35 design on 26/10/2001 for further development.
The resulting aircraft became the F-35 Lightning II, produced in three main variants: the F-35A conventional takeoff and landing version for the U.S. Air Force, the F-35B short takeoff and vertical landing variant for the U.S. Marine Corps, and the F-35C carrier-based variant for the U.S. Navy. The aircraft is powered by a Pratt & Whitney F135 turbofan engine and can reach speeds of approximately Mach 1.6 (about 1,200 mph or 1,930 km/h).
The F-35 program entered operational service when the U.S. Marine Corps declared the F-35B operational in July 2015. The aircraft integrates advanced avionics, sensor fusion technology, and stealth capabilities to perform air-to-air combat, ground attack, and reconnaissance missions. The F-35 has been adopted by multiple allied nations and continues to be produced as part of a large multinational defense program.
