The Convair F-106 Delta Dart was a supersonic interceptor developed for the United States Air Force during the Cold War as part of the country’s continental air defense system. The aircraft was developed by Convair, a division of General Dynamics, as an advanced successor to the earlier F-102 Delta Dagger. The prototype, designated YF-106, completed its first flight on 26/12/1956 at Edwards Air Force Base, California, United States.
The F-106 was designed as a high-speed interceptor capable of engaging enemy bombers at long range and high altitude. It was powered by a Pratt & Whitney J75 turbojet engine, which allowed the aircraft to reach speeds of approximately Mach 2.3 (about 1,525 mph or 2,455 km/h). The aircraft featured a delta-wing configuration, optimized for high-speed flight, and incorporated advanced avionics including the Hughes MA-1 fire-control system, which could integrate radar tracking and automated interception guidance.
A distinctive feature of the F-106 Delta Dart was its internal weapons bay, designed to carry AIM-4 Falcon air-to-air missiles and, in some configurations, the AIR-2 Genie nuclear-tipped rocket. This internal arrangement helped reduce aerodynamic drag while maintaining supersonic performance. The aircraft was also integrated with the Semi-Automatic Ground Environment (SAGE) air defense network, which allowed ground-based radar stations to guide interceptors toward incoming targets.
The F-106 entered operational service with the United States Air Force in 1959. A total of 340 aircraft were produced between 1956 and 1961. The interceptor served primarily with Air Defense Command, where it was tasked with protecting North American airspace during the Cold War. The aircraft remained in active service with the U.S. Air Force until 1988, after which some examples continued to operate with the Air National Guard and in testing roles.
