The Republic F-105 Thunderchief was a supersonic fighter-bomber developed by Republic Aviation for the United States Air Force during the Cold War. Designed primarily for high-speed strike missions, the aircraft was intended to carry nuclear or conventional weapons deep into enemy territory. The prototype YF-105A completed its first flight on 22/10/1955 at Edwards Air Force Base, California, United States, marking the beginning of flight testing for one of the largest single-engine fighter aircraft ever built.
The YF-105A prototype was flown by Republic test pilot Russell “Rusty” Roth during its maiden flight. The aircraft featured a swept-wing design, side-mounted air intakes, and a long fuselage optimized for supersonic performance. It was powered by a Pratt & Whitney J75 turbojet engine, which enabled the aircraft to exceed Mach 2 (approximately 1,386 mph or 2,230 km/h) in later operational variants. The Thunderchief also included an internal weapons bay, allowing it to carry nuclear weapons while maintaining aerodynamic efficiency.
The F-105 entered operational service with the United States Air Force in 1958 as the F-105B Thunderchief. Later variants, particularly the F-105D, were adapted for conventional bombing missions and equipped with improved avionics and weapons systems. The aircraft could carry a large external weapons load, including bombs, rockets, and missiles, making it one of the most heavily armed fighter-bombers of its time.
The Thunderchief became widely known for its role during the Vietnam War, where it was used extensively for strike missions over North Vietnam. Between 1955 and 1964, a total of 833 F-105 aircraft were produced. Although originally designed for nuclear strike missions, the aircraft became a key conventional strike platform during the conflict and remained in service with the U.S. Air Force and Air National Guard units into the 1980s.
