West Indies became the first men’s team to win the ICC T20 World Cup twice by claiming the title at the ICC World Twenty20 2016, held in India from 8 March to 3 April 2016. The tournament featured 16 teams and was played across multiple Indian cities, concluding with a final in Kolkata. The final took place on 3 April 2016 at Eden Gardens, where the West Indies national cricket team faced England national cricket team. England batted first and posted 155 for 9 in their 20 overs. West Indies, chasing 156, reached the target on the final ball, finishing on 161 for 6 to win by 4 wickets. The match is best remembered for the final over, bowled by Ben Stokes, during which Carlos Brathwaite hit four consecutive sixes to seal the victory. Brathwaite finished unbeaten on 34 off 10 balls and was named Player of the Match. Earlier, England’s innings had been led by Joe Root, who scored 54 runs, while West Indies’ bowlers kept the total within reach. With this win, West Indies added the 2016 trophy to their earlier triumph in 2012, becoming the first two-time champions in the men’s ICC T20 World Cup. The tournament also concluded with West Indies winning the women’s T20 World Cup on the same day, making them the first nation to hold both men’s and women’s T20 world titles simultaneously.
