Suleiman the Magnificent led his forces against King Louis II of Hungary in the Battle of Mohács. Prior to the conflict, the Ottoman Empire was expanding rapidly under Suleiman's leadership, and Hungary was a fragmented kingdom struggling to mount an effective defense. The Hungarian forces were composed mostly of feudal levies, while the Ottomans had a well-organized army including Janissaries, cavalry units, and artillery.
The battle was a decisive moment for the region. The Ottoman forces greatly outnumbered the Hungarian troops. Suleiman’s military strategy was to encircle and overwhelm the Hungarian forces. The battle commenced with the Ottomans launching a feigned retreat, which lured the Hungarian cavalry into a trap. The Hungarian infantry was subsequently exposed to direct attacks by Suleiman's troops.
Casualties on the Hungarian side were catastrophic with many nobles, including King Louis II, losing their lives either during the battle or while attempting to flee. The aftermath saw the effective collapse of the Kingdom of Hungary’s military strength. The defeat led to the partition of Hungary: the central part was integrated into the Ottoman Empire, Transylvania became an autonomous principality under Ottoman suzerainty, and the remaining western and northern parts were claimed by the Habsburgs.
This battle had significant long-term implications, shifting the balance of power in Central Europe and marking a substantial territorial gain for the Ottomans. It also paved the way for further Ottoman advances into Europe and a prolonged period of control over Hungary.
