On 27/11/1971, the Soviet Union’s Mars 2 spacecraft became the first human-made object to reach the surface of Mars, impacting the planet during its descent phase. The mission, launched on 19/05/1971, was part of a dual spacecraft effort alongside Mars 3, combining orbital observation with attempts at surface exploration. Mars 2 consisted of an orbiter and a lander. While the orbiter successfully entered orbit around Mars and conducted scientific observations, the lander attempted to descend to the surface. During entry, the lander’s descent system malfunctioned, causing it to crash rather than achieve a controlled landing. Despite the failure to land safely, the impact marked the first time a human-made object reached the Martian surface. The Mars 2 orbiter continued its mission, returning data about the Martian atmosphere, surface conditions, and magnetic environment. It also captured images of the planet, contributing to early mapping efforts. The mission took place during a period of global dust storms on Mars, which complicated both landing attempts and observations. Although the Mars 2 lander did not survive, its arrival on Mars represented an important milestone in planetary exploration. It demonstrated that spacecraft could travel interplanetary distances and reach the surface of another planet, setting the stage for subsequent missions that would achieve successful landings, including Mars 3 just days later.
