Poland Defends the Men’s VNL Crown

Poland captured the 2026 FIVB Men’s Volleyball Nations League title on August 2, defeating the United States 3–2 in a dramatic final at the Ningbo Beilun Sports and Arts Center in China. The victory gave Poland its third VNL championship-following triumphs in 2023 and 2025-and secured a second consecutive title. Nearly 6,000 spectators watched a contest filled with momentum swings. Poland opened strongly, winning the first set 25–21 behind the attacking and serving of Wilfredo León. The United States responded in the second set, using powerful serving from Jake Hanes to claim it 25–23. The third set developed into the match’s most intense battle. Poland led for long stretches, but the Americans recovered late. Middle blocker Taylor Averill delivered consecutive kills at the decisive moment, giving the United States a 27–25 victory and a 2–1 lead in sets. Poland was now one set away from surrendering its title. The defending champions refused to collapse. The fourth set remained close throughout, with neither team establishing a substantial advantage. After the United States tied the score at 23–23, Szymon Jakubiszak scored through the middle before León produced a commanding block to close the set 25–23 and force a tie-break. The fifth set stayed balanced until 6–6. With setter Marcin Komenda serving, Poland launched a five-point run and eventually stretched its advantage to 13–7. León created championship point with a block-out attack, and an American hit beyond the boundary ended the contest 15–10. Poland had completed the comeback. Poland’s victory was built on blocking and serving. The champions recorded 12 blocks and eight aces, outperforming the United States in both categories. Substitute outside hitter Kamil Semeniuk led Poland with 17 points, while León and Tomasz Fornal contributed 15 each. Fornal served five aces and was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. The Americans produced more attacking kills, but their 34 unforced errors proved costly. Jake Hanes led all scorers with 21 points, while veteran Matthew Anderson added 20. The defeat left the United States with its fourth silver medal from four VNL final appearances. Earlier that day, Slovenia defeated Japan 3–1 to earn the first VNL medal in its history.
