Pedro Arias Dávila, known as Pedrarias, was appointed as the Royal Governor of the territory referred to as Castilla del Oro, or Golden Castille, by Ferdinand II of Aragon and Castilla. His arrival marked a significant administrative and military effort to establish Spanish control over the region, which was rich in resources and potential for exploitation. Dávila arrived with a fleet of 22 vessels and an armada of 1,500 men, indicating the scale of the Spanish endeavor to solidify their presence in the Americas. His background as a veteran soldier, having fought in the wars against the Moors in Granada and in North Africa, equipped him with the military experience necessary for the challenges he would face in the New World.
