The Viceroyalty of New Granada was established by Spain to enhance its control over northern South America and to protect its Caribbean territories. This administrative division included the Isthmus of Panama, which was strategically important for trade and military purposes. However, the capital, Santa Fe de Bogotá, was located far from many of the territories it governed, creating challenges in governance and communication. The establishment of the Viceroyalty faced opposition from the Viceroyalty of Peru, which had historical ties and was geographically closer to several regions within New Granada. This contestation highlighted the complexities of colonial administration in a vast and diverse territory, where local interests and established authorities often clashed with new governance structures. The Viceroyalty of New Granada would later play a crucial role in the political and economic landscape of the region, influencing trade routes and colonial policies.
