In the early 1840s, political changes in Panama led to a significant shift in leadership. Herrera's title was initially changed to Superior Chief of State, reflecting a transitional phase in governance. This change occurred during a period of civil conflict, which ultimately resulted in the Isthmus negotiating its reincorporation into the larger political entity of New Granada. By the time the civil unrest subsided, Panama had experienced a brief period of independence, lasting approximately 13 months. The culmination of these events was marked by the formal reunification of Panama with New Granada, which took place at the end of December 1841. This reunification was part of a broader political landscape that would later evolve into the United States of Colombia and eventually the Republic of Colombia.
