The Balboa expedition played a crucial role in the European exploration of the Americas by confirming indigenous claims about the existence of another ocean to the southwest of the Panama isthmus. Vasco Núñez de Balboa, leading the expedition, became the first known European to view the Pacific Ocean, which he referred to as the South Sea. This discovery was significant as it opened up new avenues for exploration and trade, fundamentally altering European perceptions of the New World. Balboa's accounts, along with those of other explorers like Columbus, highlighted the rich resources and potential of the region, leading to increased interest from European powers.
