The Hay-Bunau-Varilla Treaty, signed in the early 20th century, established U.S. control over the Panama Canal and surrounding areas, leading to ongoing tensions in Panamanian politics. The treaty was met with significant opposition from Panamanians who viewed it as an infringement on their sovereignty. In response to these tensions, revisions were proposed, notably the Remon-Eisenhower Treaty, which aimed to address the grievances stemming from the original agreement. However, these revisions did not resolve the underlying issues, as they failed to provide Panamanians with the level of control and autonomy they sought over the Canal Zone. The dissatisfaction with U.S. presence persisted, fueling political discourse and activism within Panama.
