On the night of 11 December 1907, a devastating fire broke out in New Zealand’s Parliament Buildings in Wellington, destroying much of the structure and consuming valuable records and historical documents. The fire remains one of the most significant disasters in the country’s parliamentary history. The Fire & Its Impact The blaze started late in the evening and quickly spread through the wooden sections of the Parliament Buildings, which housed both the House of Representatives and the Legislative Council. The cause of the fire was never officially determined, though some suspected an electrical fault, while others suggested it may have been caused by a fireplace left burning overnight. The fire completely destroyed the original wooden Parliament House, which had been in use since the 1870s. Many important government documents and records were lost, a blow to New Zealand’s historical archives. However, the adjacent stone-built Library of Parliament was saved, thanks to the efforts of firefighters and the building's more fire-resistant construction. Aftermath & Rebuilding The fire forced Parliament to relocate temporarily to other government buildings while plans for a new structure were developed. This disaster accelerated the construction of the current Parliament Buildings, which began in 1912. The new Parliament House was built in a more fireproof, neoclassical design using reinforced concrete rather than wood. The Parliamentary Library, though damaged, survived and was later restored. The 1907 fire was a turning point in New Zealand’s parliamentary history, leading to the modernization of government buildings and highlighting the need for better fire safety in national institutions. Today, the current Parliament House and the restored Library stand as reminders of both the disaster and the resilience that followed. #NewZealandHistory #ParliamentFire #Wellington #MomentsOfLife #MoofLife_Moment #MoofLife
