The Free Republic of Rehoboth was established by the Basters in central Namibia, marking a significant development in the region's political landscape. The founders adopted a constitution that outlined the governance structure of the republic. Central to this structure was the role of the Kaptein, a leader who would be directly elected by the citizens. This democratic approach was complemented by the establishment of a small parliament, known as the Volkraad, which consisted of three members, also directly elected by the populace. This framework aimed to empower the local community and provide a platform for self-governance, reflecting the aspirations of the Basters for autonomy and representation in their political affairs.
