The Western Contact Group (WCG), comprising Canada, France, West Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States, was established to facilitate Namibia's transition to independence. This group aimed to create a diplomatic framework that would lead to a peaceful resolution of the conflict surrounding Namibia. Their efforts culminated in the presentation of Security Council Resolution 435, which outlined a comprehensive settlement plan for Namibia. The resolution emphasized the necessity of holding free and fair elections under the supervision of the United Nations, aimed at ensuring a democratic process. It also called for an immediate cessation of hostilities by all involved parties and imposed restrictions on the military, paramilitary, and police activities of both South African and Namibian forces. This resolution was a pivotal step in addressing the long-standing issues in Namibia and set the stage for its eventual independence.
