The capture of the Trans-Salween Shan States, specifically Kengtung and Sipsongpanna, marked a pivotal expansion of Burmese influence in the region. This military campaign was led by King Anaukpetlun, who sought to consolidate power and extend the territory of the Burmese kingdom. The successful annexation of these states not only increased the geographical footprint of the kingdom but also facilitated greater control over trade routes and resources in the area. The strategic importance of Kengtung and Sipsongpanna lay in their location, which served as a gateway to southern China and other neighboring regions, enhancing the economic prospects of the Burmese state. Following the capture, the region underwent significant changes under the leadership of Anaukpetlun and his successors. The reconstruction efforts initiated by King Thalun aimed to stabilize and develop the war-torn areas, leading to improved governance and infrastructure. The first census in Burmese history, conducted during Thalun's reign, revealed a population of approximately two million, indicating a growing and recovering kingdom. The successful integration of the Trans-Salween Shan States into the Burmese realm contributed to a more centralized administration and laid the groundwork for future territorial expansions and cultural exchanges.
