On 24/06/2021, Microsoft officially unveiled Windows 11 during a live-streamed virtual event, introducing the first major new version of Windows since Windows 10 launched in 2015. The announcement marked a shift from Microsoft’s earlier messaging that Windows 10 would be the last version of Windows, replacing it with a redesigned operating system focused on productivity, collaboration, and modern hardware support. The event showcased a new user interface, expanded app ecosystem, and gaming-focused enhancements.
One of the most visible changes was a centered Start menu and taskbar, replacing the left-aligned layout used in previous versions. Microsoft also introduced Snap Layouts and Snap Groups to improve multitasking, allowing users to quickly organize and switch between window arrangements. The company announced deeper integration of Microsoft Teams directly into the taskbar, replacing Skype as the default consumer communication platform. Windows 11 also introduced redesigned widgets, updated system sounds, and refreshed window styling as part of the broader visual overhaul.
Microsoft revealed that Windows 11 would support Android applications through a partnership with the Amazon Appstore, enabling mobile apps to run on Windows PCs. The company also announced updates to the Microsoft Store with a more open policy, allowing developers to keep 100 percent of revenue when using their own payment systems for non-gaming apps. Gaming enhancements were also highlighted, including Auto HDR and DirectStorage technology derived from Xbox Series X and Series S consoles, aimed at improving graphics and reducing load times on compatible hardware.
The announcement outlined Microsoft’s plan to deliver Windows 11 as a free upgrade for eligible Windows 10 devices later in 2021, alongside availability on new PCs. The event positioned Windows 11 as a redesigned platform combining productivity tools, consumer features, and expanded application support.
