On 17/02/2000, Microsoft released Windows 2000 worldwide as a major update to its business-focused operating system lineup. Previously known as Windows NT 5.0 during development, Windows 2000 was designed to replace Windows NT 4.0 on enterprise desktops, laptops, and servers. The launch was presented by Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates at an event in San Francisco, where the operating system was described as a platform for business computing and internet-based services. The Windows 2000 family included several editions: Windows 2000 Professional for desktop systems, Windows 2000 Server for departmental infrastructure, and Windows 2000 Advanced Server for larger enterprise deployments. Microsoft emphasized improved reliability, enhanced networking, and support for directory-based management through Active Directory. The operating system also introduced features such as improved hardware support, NTFS enhancements, and integrated security tools. Windows 2000 built on the Windows NT architecture and was aimed primarily at corporate environments rather than home users. The February 2000 release marked a significant step in Microsoft’s enterprise operating system strategy, providing a unified platform for desktop and server deployments.
