On 09/03/2021, Microsoft finalized its $7.5 billion cash acquisition of ZeniMax Media, the parent company of Bethesda Softworks, expanding its first-party game development portfolio. The deal added multiple studios to Xbox Game Studios, including Bethesda Game Studios, id Software, ZeniMax Online Studios, Arkane, MachineGames, Tango Gameworks, Alpha Dog, and Roundhouse Studios. Microsoft said the acquisition would strengthen its content pipeline for console, PC, and cloud gaming.
The purchase gave Microsoft control of major gaming franchises such as The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, DOOM, Wolfenstein, Dishonored, Prey, and Quake, along with the then-upcoming Starfield. Microsoft stated that Bethesda titles would be added to Xbox Game Pass, often at launch, as part of its strategy to grow the subscription service. Following completion, several existing Bethesda titles were added to Game Pass across Xbox and PC platforms.
Microsoft confirmed it would honor previously agreed exclusivity arrangements for Deathloop and Ghostwire: Tokyo on PlayStation. For future releases, the company said new Bethesda titles would be available on platforms where Xbox Game Pass exists, including Xbox consoles, Windows PC, and cloud streaming. The acquisition significantly expanded Microsoft’s internal studio network and increased its ability to release first-party titles across its gaming ecosystem.
