On 04/11/2010, Microsoft launched Kinect for the Xbox 360 in North America, introducing a controller-free motion-sensing peripheral originally developed under the codename Project Natal. The device used an RGB camera, an infrared depth sensor, and a multi-array microphone to track full-body movement and recognize voice commands. Kinect allowed players to interact with games using gestures and spoken instructions without holding a traditional controller.
The Kinect sensor launched at a retail price of $149.99 and included Kinect Adventures!, a collection of five motion-based minigames designed to demonstrate the hardware’s capabilities. The system supported player tracking, facial recognition, and voice input, enabling navigation of menus and gameplay using body movements. Microsoft positioned Kinect as a way to broaden the Xbox audience by appealing to families and casual players.
Microsoft reported that Kinect sold approximately 8 million units within its first 60 days on the market. The device earned a Guinness World Record at the time for the fastest-selling consumer electronics device. The November 2010 release marked Microsoft’s entry into motion-based gaming hardware for the Xbox platform.
