On 27/06/2006, Microsoft launched CodePlex, its first major website dedicated to hosting open-source software projects and encouraging community collaboration. The platform was unveiled at the Open Source Business Conference in London as part of Microsoft’s Shared Source Initiative. The launch marked a shift in Microsoft’s approach toward engaging with open-source developers and supporting collaborative software development. CodePlex provided tools for project hosting, version control, issue tracking, documentation, and discussion forums. Developers could publish source code, manage contributions, and collaborate with others using Microsoft technologies. The platform supported projects built on the .NET Framework and other Microsoft tools, while also allowing broader open-source participation. Microsoft said the site would serve as a central hub for community-driven development and shared innovation. The June 2006 launch represented Microsoft’s early effort to expand involvement in open-source ecosystems. CodePlex later hosted thousands of projects and served as Microsoft’s primary open-source hosting service before the company shifted focus to platforms such as GitHub.
