In 1982, Maya Angelou was appointed the first Reynolds Professor of American Studies at Wake Forest University in Winston Salem, North Carolina. The position was created for her and reflected the university’s recognition of her achievements as a writer, poet, and public intellectual. Angelou accepted the role after relocating to North Carolina, beginning a long association with the institution. The Reynolds Professorship was a lifetime teaching appointment, and Angelou remained in the role for more than three decades. Her classes drew students from across disciplines, and she became one of the university’s most recognizable faculty members. Angelou continued teaching at Wake Forest University until her death on 28/05/2014. Over the years, she mentored students, hosted visiting speakers, and contributed to the university’s academic and cultural life. Her long service as Reynolds Professor established one of the most enduring academic appointments of her career.
