In 1942, 14 year old Maya Angelou moved to Oakland, California, to live with her mother, Vivian Baxter. The relocation followed her earlier years spent primarily in Stamps, Arkansas, and periods living with family members. Moving to the San Francisco Bay Area introduced Angelou to a more urban environment during the World War II era, when the region was experiencing rapid demographic and economic change. After arriving in Oakland, Angelou attended school in the Bay Area and became increasingly independent during her teenage years. She later enrolled at Mission High School in San Francisco, where she pursued academic studies along with interests in drama and dance. Her time in the Bay Area led to several early milestones, including her hiring as a streetcar conductor in San Francisco in 1943 and her graduation from high school in 1945. The 1942 move placed Angelou in close proximity to her mother and helped shape her transition into adolescence. The experiences she encountered in Oakland and San Francisco during these years were later described in her autobiographical writing, particularly I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, which recounts her teenage life in California.
