On 12/08/1971, Random House published Maya Angelou’s first poetry collection, Just Give Me a Cool Drink of Water ’fore I Diiie. The release marked her debut as a published poet following the success of her autobiographical work I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (1969). The collection introduced readers to Angelou’s poetic voice, blending personal reflection with themes of identity, love, and social experience.
The book contains poems that explore relationships, loneliness, humor, and resilience, written in a conversational style influenced by oral storytelling traditions. Angelou’s use of rhythm and accessible language reflected her background in performance and spoken word. Several poems in the collection address everyday experiences while also touching on broader cultural and historical realities.
Following its publication, Just Give Me a Cool Drink of Water ’fore I Diiie received a nomination for the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1972. The recognition helped establish Angelou’s reputation as a poet in addition to her work as a memoirist. The collection marked an important expansion of her literary career and was followed by additional volumes of poetry in the years that followed.
