In December 1955, in the wake of Rosa Parks’ historic arrest for refusing to give up her seat on a segregated bus, the Montgomery Improvement Association (MIA) was formed in Montgomery, Alabama. This organization was established to oversee and coordinate the Montgomery Bus Boycott, a grassroots protest against racial segregation on public buses.
