Mahatma Gandhi initiated the publication of three weekly journals: 'Harijan' in English, 'Harijan Sevak' in Hindi, and 'Harijanbandhu' in Gujarati. These publications aimed to address and eliminate the pervasive social discrimination against the untouchable community, whom Gandhi referred to as 'Harijans' or 'Children of God'.
'Harijan' served as a platform for Gandhi to advocate for social reform, touching upon the pressing issue of untouchability and promoting the concept of self-purification among the upper castes. The first issue made an immediate impact by discussing the harsh realities faced by the Harijans and urging the community to engage in constructive social work. It provided a voice to the marginalized sections of society and sought to foster empathy and understanding.
Previously, Gandhi's efforts towards social equality had led to the establishment of the Harijan Sevak Sangh, an organization dedicated to the upliftment of the Dalit community. This was a continuation of his sustained campaign against caste-based discrimination. The journals were a critical extension of these efforts, enabling Gandhi to reach a broader audience and magnify his calls for social justice.
Statistical data indicate that the literacy rates were low during this time, which presented a challenge for the reach of these publications. However, Gandhi's prominence and the pressing nature of the issues discussed catalyzed support and dissemination through oral traditions and public readings, which were common in Indian villages.
These journals also played a role in shaping public opinion on India's independence movement, tying the struggle for socio-economic reforms to the broader goal of self-rule. Gandhi's emphasis on eradicating untouchability was integral to his vision of an inclusive India, which transcended mere political freedom.
