Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, an Indian lawyer, was traveling by train from Durban to Pretoria in South Africa. Holding a first-class ticket, Gandhi boarded the train and took his seat in the first-class compartment. South Africa, operating under a deeply entrenched system of racial segregation, did not recognize the rights of non-white individuals despite the validity of their travel papers. During the journey, a white passenger entered the compartment and protested an Indian sitting in first class. The train officials, supporting the protest, demanded that Gandhi move to the third-class compartment, which had been designated for people of color.
Gandhi refused to comply, asserting that he had a legitimate right to sit in the first-class carriage with a valid ticket. Despite his argument, the train officials were insistent. The standoff resulted in Gandhi being forcibly removed from the train at the Pietermaritzburg station by railway officials. The night was cold, and Gandhi spent it in the waiting room of the station, reflecting on the injustice he had experienced.
The incident marked a pivotal point in Gandhi's life. It exposed the harsh realities of racial discrimination he had previously only read about, and it prompted a broader realization about the need for active resistance to such systemic injustice. This encounter became a catalyst for his subsequent leadership in non-violent civil rights movements. Gandhi's experience in South Africa significantly influenced his development of Satyagraha, the philosophy of nonviolent resistance, which he later implemented during the struggle for India's independence.
The case illustrates the racial policies of the time, enforcing segregation and suppressing the rights of non-whites, demonstrating the systemic barriers they faced. Gandhi's subsequent activism signaled the beginning of a larger struggle against racial discrimination and colonial oppression in both South Africa and later in India.
