Rafic Hariri, a prominent Lebanese businessman and former Prime Minister, was assassinated in a car bombing on February 14th. Hariri, widely known for his role in rebuilding Beirut following the Lebanese Civil War, was traveling along the Beirut seafront when the bomb detonated. The explosion, equivalent to around 1,000 kilograms of TNT, left a massive crater and caused extensive damage to surrounding buildings. The blast killed Hariri along with 21 others and injured over 200 people. In his tenure as Prime Minister, Hariri had been a strong advocate for economic policies aimed at revitalizing Lebanon's infrastructure and economy. His assassination plunged the country into political turmoil. The event sparked widespread public outrage and led to massive demonstrations against the Syrian military presence in Lebanon. These protests, predominantly peaceful but occasionally marred by violence, became a significant part of what is now known as the Cedar Revolution. The assassination had far-reaching geopolitical implications. It increased international pressure on Syria, as evidence of Syrian and Lebanese intelligence involvement emerged. Consequently, this pressure led to the withdrawal of Syrian forces from Lebanon after nearly three decades of military presence. The United Nations also established the Special Tribunal for Lebanon to investigate and prosecute those responsible for the assassination, marking a rare instance of a UN body being set up specifically for a single act of terror. Economically, the country faced sharp instability, with investor confidence shaken and significant impacts on the tourism industry. Politically, new alliances were formed, and old ones fractured, further complicating Lebanon's already intricate sectarian landscape. The quest for justice and accountability for Hariri's assassination remains a pivotal issue in Lebanese politics.
