Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister, was instrumental in advocating for the merging of princely states into the Indian Republic, thus completing the political integration of the nation. The background of this crucial phase in Indian history was marked by over 550 princely states varying in size and governance styles. Post-independence, the task of unification was necessary to ensure political and administrative cohesion across the newly formed country.
Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the then Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Home Affairs, worked closely with Nehru in this endeavor. They utilized diplomatic tactics, negotiations, and offered incentives to persuade the rulers of princely states to accede to the Indian Union. The Instrument of Accession allowed these states to join the republic, maintaining some internal autonomy while surrendering control over defense, communications, and foreign affairs to the Indian government.
One prominent example was the integration of Hyderabad, which initially resisted accession. It was integrated following a police action operation termed 'Operation Polo.' Similarly, Jammu and Kashmir's accession became a complex issue due to regional and international disputes, requiring special handling.
The impact of this integration was multifaceted. Politically, it established a centralized and robust governance model essential for a diverse and vast country like India. Economically, it facilitated uniform policies and development programs across the regions. Socially, it helped in diminishing the feudal system prevalent in princely states, promoting democratic values. According to reports, about 215,000 square miles of territory were consolidated, benefiting over 80 million people.
Nehrus's advocacy for integration underscored his vision of a united India, paving the way for the establishment of a strong, sovereign nation-state. His efforts, along with Patel’s strategies, ensured that India maintained territorial integrity and built a foundation for future development.
