On the directive for Indian self-rule within the British Empire initiated by the Quit India Movement, British authorities made a decisive move to curb this growing insurrection. In a coordinated effort, they arrested the leading figures of the Indian National Congress. Notable among those detained were Jawaharlal Nehru and Mahatma Gandhi, alongside the entire Congress Working Committee.
Nehru was specifically confined in Ahmednagar Fort, where he endured solitary conditions. This mass incarceration was a British strategy to dismantle the leadership of the Indian independence movement, hoping to stem the surge of civil disobedience that was spreading across the country. The British government declared the Congress unlawful, consequently sparking nationwide unrest.
The effects of these arrests were profound and immediate. Civilian protests erupted in various regions, leading to widespread strikes and demonstrations. Educational institutions and businesses closed in solidarity, and transport, communication, and administrative services suffered significant disruptions. Apart from symbolic resistance, these activities undeniably marked a catalyzing phase of India’s struggle for freedom. The crackdown also drew international attention, highlighting the severity of British colonial measures to maintain control over India.
As the leadership remained imprisoned, the movement reportedly saw a shift in operations, with underground networks gaining prominence. Many local leaders and young activists continued the push for independence, often facing harsh repercussions. This phase of the movement proved to be a decisive chapter, sustaining the momentum towards eventual independence.
