On 21/03/1188, Emperor Antoku was not alive and therefore did not ascend to power on that date. Historical records confirm that Antoku, the 81st emperor of Japan, died on 25/04/1185 during the Battle of Dan-no-ura, a decisive naval conflict of the Genpei War. His death occurred when he was still a child, as members of the Taira clan, facing defeat, took him with them into the sea. Emperor Antoku had originally ascended to the throne in 1180, at a young age, under the influence of the Taira clan, particularly Taira no Kiyomori. His reign took place during a period of intense conflict between the Taira and Minamoto clans. By 1185, the Minamoto victory at Dan-no-ura ended the war and led to the fall of Taira power, bringing Antoku’s reign to a sudden end. The date of 21/03/1188 may reflect confusion with other events or timelines from the late Heian period, but it does not correspond to any known accession or major event in Emperor Antoku’s life. By that time, political authority had shifted significantly, with Minamoto no Yoritomo consolidating power and establishing the foundations of the Kamakura shogunate in 1192.
