The diplomatic engagement between the Majapahit Kingdom and the Mongol Empire occurred during the reign of Kublai Khan, the fifth Khagan of the Mongol Empire. This moment followed a period of tension and conflict initiated by a perceived act of disrespect when King Kertanegara of the Singhasari Kingdom refused to pay tribute to the Mongols. In response, Kublai Khan dispatched a force to Java to impose his authority.
Upon their arrival, the Mongols found that the local kingdom had undergone upheaval. Kertanegara had been overthrown by Jayakatwang, who then ruled the region. Raden Wijaya, a loyalist of the earlier regime and a notable leader, saw this as an opportunity and sought an alliance with the Mongols. Wijaya agreed to cooperate with the Mongols to overthrow Jayakatwang. Once Jayakatwang was defeated, Wijaya turned against the Mongols, ambushing them and driving them from Java.
As an outcome of Wijaya's strategic maneuver, the Majapahit Kingdom was established, marking the beginning of its rule. The Mongol attempt to assert dominance over Java failed, and they withdrew, having gained little from the campaign. This event significantly influenced the regional power dynamics. The Majapahit Kingdom emerged as a major political and military power in the Southeast Asian archipelago, later known for its unifying influence over the region.
