Hungarian King Sigismund led a Crusade to halt the expansion of the Ottoman Empire. Europe's nobility, including knights from France, England, and the Holy Roman Empire, assembled a significant force, estimated to be around fifteen thousand soldiers, at the city of Buda before advancing toward Ottoman-held Bulgaria.
The Crusaders faced Ottoman Sultan Bayezid I, whose disciplined army of approximately twelve thousand troops, including skilled archers and experienced Janissaries. The clash, known as the Battle of Nicopolis, occurred near the Danube River, close to the city of Nicopolis. European knights, confident in their heavy cavalry, charged prematurely, leading to initial success against Ottoman vanguard units.
However, the uncoordinated and hastily arranged attack dissolved the Crusaders' advantage. Bayezid's forces, strategically positioned, counter-attacked and capitalized on the disarray within the Crusader ranks. The heavily armored European knights struggled on the uneven terrain, and many were overwhelmed by waves of Ottoman archers.
The battle concluded with a decisive Ottoman victory. King Sigismund, along with a few of his men, managed to escape across the Danube. However, the defeat had significant repercussions. Sultan Bayezid consolidated Ottoman control over the Balkans, delaying European attempts to counter Ottoman expansion. The heavy loss caused by the Crusaders sowed doubt and dismay among European states about launching subsequent Crusades.
The Battle of Nicopolis underscored the evolving nature of warfare and the need for better coordination among disparate European forces. It revealed stark differences in military technology and tactics between the Ottomans and the European knights. Furthermore, it highlighted the limits of feudal and chivalric warfare against a centrally organized state like the Ottoman Empire.
