Sony Computer Entertainment launched the PlayStation 3 in Japan. The console marked Sony’s entry into the seventh generation of home gaming systems and succeeded the PlayStation 2.
The PlayStation 3 debuted in Japan with two hardware configurations: a 20GB model priced at ¥49,980 and a 60GB model priced at ¥59,980. The system featured Sony’s Cell Broadband Engine processor, developed in collaboration with IBM and Toshiba, and supported high-definition output. It also included a built-in Blu-ray Disc drive, positioning the console as both a gaming device and a high-definition media player at a time when Blu-ray and HD DVD were competing optical disc formats.
Launch titles in Japan included Ridge Racer 7, Genji: Days of the Blade, and Resistance: Fall of Man. Sony prepared approximately 100,000 units for the Japanese launch. Reports from retail outlets indicated that the initial shipment sold out quickly, with long lines forming at major electronics stores.
The PlayStation 3 later launched in North America on 17/11/2006 and in Europe on 23/03/2007. Over its lifespan, the console sold more than 87 million units worldwide. The Japanese release on 11/11/2006 marked Sony’s introduction of Blu-ray–enabled console gaming during a competitive period that included Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Nintendo’s Wii.
