Sony Computer Entertainment released the PlayStation in Japan. The launch marked Sony’s entry into the home video game console market and introduced a CD-ROM–based system designed to support 3D graphics and larger game storage capacity compared to cartridge-based competitors.
The original Japanese model, designated SCPH-1000, launched at a retail price of ¥39,800. The console used a 32-bit RISC CPU and relied on CD-ROM discs for game distribution, allowing developers to include full-motion video, larger audio tracks, and more complex game data. Launch titles in Japan included Ridge Racer, Battle Arena Toshinden, and King’s Field. Sony positioned the PlayStation as a platform for both arcade-style games and emerging 3D experiences.
The PlayStation’s debut came during a competitive period in Japan’s console market, which included Sega’s Sega Saturn, released on 22/11/1994. In its first month on sale, Sony reportedly sold over 300,000 units in Japan. The system would later launch in North America on 09/09/1995 and in Europe on 29/09/1995.
Over its commercial lifespan, the original PlayStation sold more than 100 million units worldwide, becoming the first video game console to surpass that sales milestone. The Japanese release on 03/12/1994 established Sony as a long-term participant in the global console market.
