Sony Computer Entertainment released the PlayStation 2 in Japan. The console succeeded the original PlayStation and introduced upgraded hardware designed to support advanced 3D graphics, DVD playback, and backward compatibility with most original PlayStation games. The Japanese launch model (SCPH-10000) retailed for ¥39,800. The system featured Sony’s custom “Emotion Engine” CPU and a Graphics Synthesizer designed to handle complex polygon rendering. In addition to gaming, the PS2 functioned as a DVD player, a feature that broadened its appeal at a time when standalone DVD players were still relatively expensive. The console supported memory cards for saved data and shipped with a DualShock 2 controller, which included pressure-sensitive buttons. Initial demand at launch was high. Sony prepared approximately one million units for the Japanese release window, and large queues were reported at retail stores on launch day. Despite some early supply constraints, sales remained strong throughout 2000. The PlayStation 2 later launched in North America on 26/10/2000 and in Europe on 24/11/2000. Over its production lifespan, the PlayStation 2 became the best-selling video game console in history, with more than 155 million units sold worldwide. The Japanese release on 04/03/2000 marked the beginning of a console generation that would dominate global hardware sales throughout the early 2000s. #PlayStation2 #Sony #VideoGameHistory #2000 #PS2
