Nintendo released the Game Boy in Japan, introducing a cartridge-based handheld video game system designed for portable play. Developed under the leadership of Gunpei Yokoi, the Game Boy combined interchangeable game cartridges with a compact, battery-powered design.
The original model, known as DMG-01, featured a monochrome 2.6-inch LCD screen and was powered by four AA batteries, offering extended battery life compared to several competing handheld systems of the period. The Game Boy launched in Japan at a retail price of ¥12,500. Early Japanese titles included Super Mario Land, Alleyway, and Yakuman. Shortly after its release, the system gained broader international recognition when it launched in North America in July 1989 bundled with Tetris, a game that contributed significantly to the device’s global appeal.
Within its first two weeks in Japan, Nintendo reportedly sold approximately 300,000 units. Over time, the Game Boy platform expanded with revisions such as the Game Boy Pocket and Game Boy Color. Combined worldwide sales of the Game Boy and Game Boy Color ultimately exceeded 118 million units, making it one of the best-selling video game systems of its era.
The release of the Game Boy on 21/04/1989 established Nintendo’s long-term presence in the handheld gaming market, where it maintained strong commercial performance throughout the 1990s.
