In November 1975, Atari, Inc. released the home version of Pong, bringing one of the most recognizable arcade games into American living rooms. The dedicated home console, commonly known as Atari Pong, was distributed primarily through a partnership with retailer Sears and sold under the name “Tele-Games Pong.” The original arcade Pong, launched in 1972, had become one of the first commercially successful video arcade games in the United States. Building on that popularity, Atari engineer Harold Lee developed a single-chip home version capable of connecting directly to a television set. The home unit featured two built-in controllers (rotary paddles) and offered several game variations, including standard Pong, doubles, and practice modes. Unlike earlier systems such as the 1972 Magnavox Odyssey, the Atari Pong home console used integrated circuitry designed specifically for the game, simplifying setup and reducing the need for external accessories. Sears secured an exclusive agreement to sell the console for the 1975 holiday season, marketing it through its catalog and retail stores. Priced at approximately $98.95, the system saw strong consumer demand. Atari produced around 150,000 units for Sears, and the consoles reportedly sold out during the Christmas shopping period. The commercial performance of Atari Pong demonstrated sustained consumer interest in home video gaming and encouraged Atari and other manufacturers to expand development of dedicated home systems in the mid-1970s. Following the 1975 launch, numerous competitors entered the market with similar Pong-style consoles, often referred to as “Pong clones.” The release of Atari Pong in November 1975 contributed to the rapid growth of the home video game sector, which would soon transition toward programmable cartridge-based systems later in the decade. #Atari #Pong #VideoGameHistory #1975 #HomeConsole
