United Kingdom became the first country to authorize a COVID-19 vaccine for public use, granting emergency approval to the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. The authorization was issued by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) following a rolling review of clinical trial data.
The vaccine, developed by Pfizer and BioNTech, is an mRNA-based vaccine known as BNT162b2. Phase 3 clinical trial results involving more than 43,000 participants showed approximately 95% efficacy in preventing symptomatic COVID-19 infection. The trials included participants from multiple countries and demographic groups.
The first person to receive the approved vaccine outside clinical trials was Margaret Keenan, aged 90, who was vaccinated on 08/12/2020 at University Hospital Coventry in England. The rollout began across the National Health Service (NHS), prioritizing elderly residents in care homes, healthcare workers, and individuals at high risk.
Later in December 2020, other regulatory agencies, including the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA), authorized the same vaccine for emergency use. The approval marked the first regulatory authorization of an mRNA vaccine in history and initiated global vaccination campaigns aimed at reducing COVID-19 transmission, severe disease, and mortality.
