The Lake Monoun disaster occurred in Cameroon when a limnic eruption released a large volume of carbon dioxide from the depths of the lake. This natural phenomenon is rare but can have devastating consequences, as seen in this incident. The eruption led to the sudden release of gas, which displaced the oxygen in the surrounding area, creating a lethal environment for those nearby. In total, 37 individuals lost their lives due to the asphyxiation caused by the high concentration of carbon dioxide. The event highlighted the potential dangers associated with lakes that have volcanic origins, particularly those that can accumulate gases over time. Following the disaster, it became evident that monitoring such lakes is crucial to prevent similar tragedies in the future. The Lake Monoun disaster is one of only two recorded cases of limnic eruptions, the other being the more catastrophic Lake Nyos disaster, which resulted in a significantly higher death toll. This incident serves as a reminder of the hidden dangers that can exist in natural bodies of water, especially in volcanic regions.
