The Nevado del Ruiz volcanic eruption is recognized as one of the deadliest volcanic events in the 20th century. Located in Colombia, the eruption triggered a massive lahar, which is a type of volcanic mudflow. This lahar descended rapidly down the slopes of the volcano, overwhelming the town of Armero. The combination of volcanic ash and melted snow and ice from the volcano created a fast-moving flow that buried the town, leading to catastrophic consequences. The eruption and subsequent lahar resulted in the deaths of approximately 23,000 individuals, highlighting the devastating impact of volcanic activity on populated areas. The event underscored the importance of monitoring volcanic activity and implementing effective disaster preparedness strategies in regions prone to such natural disasters.
